Conditions such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataracts, presbyopia, and even dry eye diseases can seriously jeopardise a performer's career.
Take AMD, for instance. This degenerative eye disease progresses through stages, each presenting unique challenges. In its advanced form, known as geographic atrophy (GA), it can severely compromise a musician's ability to read sheet music or see instrument keys clearly. Similarly, cataracts, which typically affect those over 50, can cloud the lens of the eye, making it nearly impossible for performers to see objects in front of them clearly.
The impact of these conditions extends beyond just reading music or scripts. Visual field loss can be incredibly distressing for performing artists, affecting their spatial awareness on stage and their ability to interact with fellow performers or the audience.

Abigayle Doe FSc FBDO - Founder/Optician
Abigayle has established a nationwide network of clinics for performing arts professionals suffering from eye disease and ocular disorders. Abigayle helps clients find practical solutions for their vision issues and challenges.
Abigayle believes that vision correction is more than just correcting refractive errors; she also considers the visual demands of her clients. With an interest in behavioural optics, she helps her clients make the best use of their visual system.
Approximately 20% of the population, despite having normal eyes, struggle to use their visual system effectively. As they age, many performers struggle with common tasks that others take for granted, such as sight reading, using digital screens, playing an instrument that impairs vision, and scanning manuscripts and scores. Abigayle strives to raise awareness of these issues by soeaking at various events and championing performers visual health.
Abigalye was named Dispensing Optician of the Year at the 2024 Eye Care Awards for her efforts to assist performers with deteriorating vision.
Sheryl Doe BSc FBDO - Consultant Optician
With over 23 years of experience in optics, Sheryl founded the UK's first performing arts optical practice, Allegro Optical and became the first optician to be registered with the British Association of Performing Arts Medicine in 2018. Awards such as the 2019 BNB Arts and Entertainment Business of the Year and the Opticians Award Dispensing Optician of the Year 2019 helped her increase awareness of vision care among performers.
Sheryl speaks extensively about performing arts visual health. She will co-present a Visual Health in Music Education workshop at the ISME World Conference in Helsinki in July 2024 and co-host the UK's first Visual Health in Performing Arts Symposium at York University's Music Department in 2022. In collaboration with Sheryl, the Oxford Handbook for Musician Health Advocacy is being written.
Working with charities and advocacy groups Sheryl raises awareness of the impact of eye disease and ocular disorders on performers and artists.
Sheryl has written extensively on ophthalmic dispensing and lens design. She is the industry's leader. She also discovers that her vision correction method is effective for production workers, sound engineers, teachers, lecturers, and frequent presenters. Sheryl enjoys music and has played cello and double bass in school. She is a member of a local brass band and plays the cornet.
